A Week In Review: November 14th
This past week was full of new learning in Room 17. I also wanted to give you a few reminders about upcoming events:
HOLIDAY SHOP: A letter went home with your child last week regarding the Holiday Shop. This is a time for your children to purchase items for their loved ones all by themselves. They will have a personal shopper with them to help them make decisions, but for the most part they get to do it all by themselves. I know my girls feel so proud when they give me the gifts that they picked out for me. Your child does not have to participate - it is completely voluntary. The children are only allowed to purchase gifts for other people, they are not allowed to buy gifts for themselves at the holiday shop.
In math we have been continuing to work with counting numbers and one to one matching. We have been learning many games that require us to roll a dice, identify the number, and then count out the named amount of objects. This is really tricky. We are being really careful so that we don't double count any of the objects. Next week we are going to be learning about shapes and many ways to represent a number.
NEW POPCORN WORDS will go home next week. There will only be 3 words - 2 new ones and 1 review word. Thank you for helping your child recognize these words when they see them in books. We are continuing to work on the following words this week:
- $10 Holiday Party Money is due ASAP
- Field Trip permission slips and $8 is due on Wednesday
- Yuck Soup Items are due tomorrow morning. Please send in an item for our soup. We have lots of noodles already. We could use the following items: crackers, cut up carrot, cut up tomato, cut up celery, cut up onion, and veggie that would be good in soup. I will be bringing in the broth for our soup.
- Thanksgiving Celebration: On Wednesday afternoon, we will be having a little celebration with our Yuck Soup, Bread, and class made butter.

This week we had a reading celebration. We completed our first reading unit and wanted to celebrate with the BIG KIDS. 4th Graders from Mrs. Knapp's class came over to visit and celebrate with us. We shared with them all of the reading strategies that we have learned. The 4th Graders had a little bit of time to read our favorite stories to us too.
In Writing, we started writing our very own books. We worked on drawing a story over multiple pages. Once we had our story written with pictures, we went back and tried to label the things in our pictures.
Math

Gratitude Steel Drum Band
As a part of our Diversity Week Celebration, the Gratitude Steel Drum Band came to play music for us from all over the world. This was such a fun time. Thank you to the PTA for making it possible.
Thankful for Books
Thank you for returning the Feathers for our turkey. He sure looks good with all of the fancy feathers the children have added!

A Week in Review: November 7th
ZETH the Corn Snake Visits Room 17
I think the highlight of the week was that Zeth - Mrs. Pfeffer's snake visited our classroom at his lunch time. The kids were so thrilled that they could watch him eat his weekly lunch - a mouse.
FIELD TRIP NEWS: Outdoor Center
We will be going on our next field trip on December 1st. A permission slip went home with your children last week. We will be going to the Walled Lake Outdoor Education Center. Since this is an extension of our school community, teachers will be the only chaperones this time. THANKSGIVING AND WINTER CELEBRATIONS
Please let me know if you are able to volunteer at our upcoming celebrations. We will have a small celebration (YUCK Soup!, bread, and homemade butter On Wednesday, November 23rd). I will just need some help running game stations on that day.
For the WINTER celebration on Thursday, December 23rd, we will be doing winter themed activities. I will need some help before the party to get the activities ready and I will need parent volunteers at school to help with the activities. Please let me know if you are available for either celebration. Additionally, I will be sending home a note/baggie for Holiday Celebrations. I am going to ask $10/child to cover the cost of food and crafts for our remaining celebrations in Kindergarten (Thanksgiving, Winter, Valentine's Day, and 100s Day).Thank you all for coming to parent teacher conferences on Tuesday. I very much enjoyed my conversations with all of you! I just know this is going to be the best year!

A Week In Review: The Week of October 31st
So much happened this week that it seems like Halloween was months ago! This week I am going to start with some school news!

Zane is collecting warm clothing items for the South Oakland Shelter. We are helping him reach his goal of 300 items. Any donation of new socks, warm clothes can be placed in the box outside Mr. Malonis' classroom.
In Math we are working on sorting objects in a variety of ways. We sorted objects with partners and tried to figure out what sorting rules other pairs used. It was a very fun activity and the kids loved trying to find new ways to sort the objects.

PTA NEEDS YOU! PTA has asked me to find a parent that would be our classroom representative. As a representative, you would have to attend 1 meeting a month to help the PTA makes decisions about for school community. Room 17 News
Our Halloween celebration was a success. The kids had a great time seeing the hallway decorated and marching in our Halloween parade. Thank you for coming to celebrate with us!

In writing, we are working on telling stories orally. Your children are working really hard to tell their stories using the transition words - FIRST, THEN or NEXT, and LAST. We listened to each other tell stories and snapped our fingers when we heard those words. It was really very fun. Consider encouraging your Kindergartner to use first, next and last when telling you a story at home.
We are also working very hard to recognize letters (Capital and Lowercase) as well as finding the POPCORN words in our reading books. It is truly amazing how much your children have grown as learners in such a short amount of time.
